Top gun inverted flight scene ?
Hello everyone, this Q is for Top gun fanatics. The inverted flight scene, where the F14 flies inverted over the fictitious "Mig 28" and the pilot of the F14 flips the bird to the Russian pilot, is that possible in reality ?? One of the guys I work with says it is not possible because the upwash from the Mig's wingtip vortices would just cause the F14 to tumble, but I disagree because the F14 has twice as much thrust as the Mig (which is actually an F5), which means it can counteract the upwash easily. Also, I feel that if the power and speed of the F14 is adjusted, it's wake turbulence will not effect the Mig.
Anyways, that's my belief. What do some of the "experts" on this subject think ?? Is this stunt possible in real life, or am I just wrong ??
Hope to get some enlightening replies.
Cheers,
Murtaza
Possible? Yes.
Stupid? Yes.
No modern military pilot in his right mind would ever do such a thing with another pilot with whom he has no communication and when he has no idea what the other guy might do. This is just one of many details in that movie that are pretty unrealistic and not representative of actual military flying (another example: shouting on the mic from seat to seat and from one aircraft to another about everything they see as they execute maneuvers in and out of formation - just silly - but I guess you need to do that or the audience falls asleep).
ADDED: Another classic example - intentionally buzzing the tower. Yeah, right, sure...
