how much does an average tattoo artist make?
i'm 16 love to draw and i've drawn over 20 of my friends tattoos and they love it. they told me i should get into tattooing. i was wondering how much an average one makes and how much the top of the line make. i'm just going to do it as a side thing but my main goal is animation or car design.
It depends on the shop and the location, the amount of business obviously. Military & college towns tend to be pretty busy. Most artists that I know of work as independant contractors. Say a tattoo sells for $200... the artist may make 50% and the shop keep the other 50%. All shops are different. But apprenticeship isn't cheap. Prepare to pay them to work there and learn. My exhusband has been a tattoo artist for about 10 years. There were weeks he made a few hundred and weeks our pockets were fat... it just depends.
