Breastfeeding Questions.?
I'm past due by a day, my heart is set on breastfeeding no matter what the answers to these questions are, I'm just asking so I know. Some might sound a little silly, but I figured it's better to ask anyway.
1. Can I donate blood while I'm breastfeeding? Will it effect my milk supply?
2. Can I get a tattoo while I'm breastfeeding? Does it matter where the tattoo is placed?
3. What kinds of birth control is safe to take/use while breastfeeding? (in addition to condoms)
4. Are the restrictions as far as what I can eat as strict while breastfeedingas they are while pregnant? (Do I still have to avoid caffeine and diet foods?)
5. Are restrictions with medications I can take as strict? (I have terrible allergies, and have been going crazy unable to treat them while pregnant.)
6. Is it okay to take diet pills while breastfeeding? (Over the counter fat-burners, metabolism boosters, or appetite decreasers)
7. With which doctor should I address my breastfeeding questions? Gyno, pedtrcn?
I breastfed my 1st for 1 year and had every challenge you could possibly have while breastfeeding from problems getting the baby to latch on... to loss of milk supply, but I stuck it out. My 2nd who is now 6 months old and I are professional at the breastfeeding gig. I know that it is importnt to breastfeed if you are able so I will share what I know.
Answer to question #1... I would not donate til you have breastfed exclusively for 2-3 mos to establish a good milk supply. The red cross will be able to tell you if the will accept the donation.
Question #2 I would say no tattoo till you are done breastfeeding. I do believe when I got my tattoo the waiver i signed questioned if I was pregnant or breastfeeding, so I imagine it's not reccomended. Plus, if you want to donate blood, you aren't to have been tattooed in the last year. red cross will not accept donations if you have been tattooed in the last 12 mos.
Question #3 There is a pill that is a lower doseage called Lo Estrin (could be wrong on the spelling) I tried this after my first baby, then found out I was pregnant with my second. I now have an IUD which has beed great for me.
Question#4 Moderation is KEY. It's not as bad as when you are pregnant. I still enjoy caffine, wine, spicy food and chocolate. Sometimes baby can be colicky and you may have to cut back or omit certain things from your diet. It's all trial and error. I had to quit eating dairy with my first baby. But my second isn't nearly as picky.
Questin #5 My OB said it was completely safe to take my claritin for allergies and I take it daily. I take advil cold and sinus when I have a cold and no problems there.
Question#6 Don't take diet pills. It's not safe for you... let alone baby. You will be suprised how much weight you can loose from breastfeeding, a good diet and low impact excercise.
Question #7 talk to your OB about breastfeeding, more importantly a lactation specialist in your area after you have your baby.
Dont give up if it is hard for you. It is a great gift to give your baby. It is the best bond you can have with him or her, and enjoy every precious moment! Just about any challenge can be overcome. And if for some reason, you are unable to breastfeed, that is ok too. Just give it your best shot. Good Luck!!
