I have cable modem with turbo broadband. Is the extra broadband wasted if I use wireless modem for all my pcs?
I don't want to waste my money if the extra speed accomplishes nothing.
First of all, there is no such thing as "turbo" broadband. It is likely just a marketing term created by your local cable company or Internet provider you are using. For example, Comcast has something called "power boost" and to them it just means when you first begin a download, download speeds are temporarily much faster than normally offered.
In addition to "power boost", which is included with all Broadband (high speed) plans with Comcast, they do offer faster connections that you pay an additional premium for; however, speeds are so high to begin with, I personally don't see the value in spending even more for an internet connection. You really only need that if you are supplying an internet connection to an entire frathouse or a dozen residents in an apartment building are all illegally sharing the same connection.
To answer your question, in all likelihood, no. The speed of your wireless router should exceed the available bandwidth. In my case I have about 15 mbs (megabits per second) download (information received) and 7 mbs upload (information sent like emails and files uploaded to the internet).
Because my wireless router communicates at 54 mbs, it far exceeds the bandwidth provided by Comcast.
The only thing that can slow you down is the quality of your connection. Let's say your router is in between file cabinets or on the opposite end of your home as another computer. If the signal strength isn't very good, the speed will be much less when it is having a difficult time maintaining a working connection.
Since you didn't specify which router you are using nor the actual speed of your connection, for all I know I could be incorrect. So in order to know for certain, find out what the wireless communication speed is of your router and also your high-speed internet connection. Whichever one is higher than the other will answer your question.
Your cable provider will be able to tell you what kind of connection you have, but personally I prefer to use www.speedtest.net. As for the router speed, sometimes it will say it's speed right on it, or you might have to find it's specifications on the internet by searching for it's model number.
Hope this helps.
