Is this true about HIV?
People always say you can get HIV from a tattoo. Well I got a tattoo, and I don't see how it's possible. I mean, they say that even if you change/clean the needle to can still get it because blood (trace amounts) can get in the ink tube...but to me that seems like an impossible way to transmit HIV. I mean, the ink tube is not air tight, so blood would dry, and even if it didn't the ink would kill it. Plus I mean, wouldn't you notice if the ink tube had never been cleaned? Why would you procede on with a clearly dirty ink tube (actually, someone told me that the ink tube won't work or something if it's dirty, it gets all jammed up).
I'm just curious, I'm not worried about hiv necesarily...of course, if one of you corrects me up here and gives me a reason to worry, then I will, but I'm pretty comfortable.
actually, the drying of blood DOES kill HIV. While some viruses are resilient, HIV dies the minute the blood dries. The CDC proved it.
You're right. There has never been a single documented case of HIV that was definitively transmited by tattooing.
HIV is actually a very weak virus, and can be killed simply by exposure to air.
Of greater concern is Hepetitis. That little bugger is tough. The only thing that kills it is autoclaving (which all good tattoo artists do).
Assuming your tattoo artist autoclaves everything and uses fresh supplies where ever possible (especially needles), the artist is at more risk than you are. After all, who's getting poked, him or you? Since you're the one spilling blood, your artist is the one at the most risk.
