Folks with serious ink: Please share some tips on staying calm under the needle....?
I have several tattoos, but only started my first large one about a month ago. I had the outline sitting for a piece that covers most of my shoulder and upper arm, which lasted two hours. Since I did OK during my other four (smaller) tattoos, I was disappointed to find that after about an hour in the chair I started to get shaky and have a hard time holding still. I was well rested, etc. Obviously, keeping your ability to hold still is pretty dang important during a tattoo!!
Do you have any tips on how you stay cool and relaxed during a longer tattoo session? I was alone in the shop with my artist for the last sitting, just listening to my iPod and trying desperately to go to my "happy place." I'm hoping I'll have an easier time if I take a friend with me and have someone to chat with - maybe to distract me better.
Love my new tattoo even with just the outline! I want to be better prepared when I go back for shading and color. Thanks for any tips you can share!
Pretty much I agree with the other folks here. Friends, normal meal beforehand (1 hour or so; treat it like an exercise session), music, and so on. I think the friend option is the best of those suggested, just make sure you have a chatty friend. You don't want to have to drive the conversation. That and asking for breaks about once an hour might help best.
In my case, I'm a really stubborn butthead & my solution probably won't help out. I figure if folks can meditate through stuff like this, than dammit so can I. It doesn't work for me like it seems to for others. I definitely feel the pain, but by focusing on it - practically obsessing on it - and ignoring everything else it somehow doesn't bother me as much.
Pretty much my brain tells my body it's going to deal with the pain & it might as well shut up about how much so & so area hurts. "La la la, I can't hear you whine back & sides, la la la".
Best of luck to you. Barring cutting out excess sugar or caffeine beforehand, which contributed to the one time I had a similar problem, I hope the above helps.
Addendum: Rider had a really serious marathon session a while back - something like 9 hours! I can't imagine that. My best is a little over three.
