Indigo 'henna' onto washed-out died hair?
I died my hair 'permanent' jet-black months and months ago... And it practically faded out completely after 3 washes. It's not damaged at all as I take extremely good care of it (even the hair dressers I go to say so, so I suppose it's all good).
I would like to go back to black, but I want to use indigo 'henna' (I know it's not henna, I read about the whole indigo thing on hennaforhair.com/mehandi shop place + I checked some books at the library) because I know it lasts so much longer and isn't so damaging to the hair.
The question is: is it safe to use on my hair now, after the dye has washed out? Of course I will do the strand test first to make sure the color is good etc. What ingredients should I watch out for/be careful with?
As long as you're using pure plants, you could do it now, immediately. Neither henna nor indigo will react to any type of chemical dye. What causes reactions is metallic salts (read through Henna for Hair some more, you'll find the low down on how metallic henna's always been confused with real henna and other real plants.) So the ingredients you want are henna (Lawsonia inermis) and indigo (Indigofera tinctoria). One ingredient per plant powder, nothing but plant powder, totally pure, etc. etc.
Read through the basic black mix procedure a few times. You'll need henna alone first, then indigo alone. It's a good idea to get some cmc powder to mix into your indigo, it really improves the texture from sandy to creamy.
Henna with metallic salts is very hard to find these days, but it still exists so be doubly sure you're buying pure ingredients. Metallic salts react with ammonia and peroxide. So while it's risky to use a metallic salt dye after a peroxide/ammonia dye, it's not as risky as doing the metallic dye first, since the metal salts do not leave your hair, while ammonia and peroxide will mostly wash totally out.
So ammonia/peroxide dyes + metallic dyes = really bad. Henna and all pure plant dyes + any type of dye = no weird reactions, although colors may always come out more red when you've used henna in the past. When you know your plants are pure, you never have to worry about your hair burning off or turning green.
