the literal meaning of Women by Alice Walker (poem)?
i'm having trouble finding the LITERAL meaning of this poem :
They were women then
My mama's generation
Husky of voice--stout of
Step
With fists as well as
Hands
How they battered down
Doors
And ironed
Starched white
Shirts
How they led
Armies
Headragged generals
Across mined
Fields
Booby-trapped
Ditches
To discover books
Desks
A place for us
How they knew what we
Must know
Without knowing a page
Of it
Themselves.
its about women who sacrificed themselves for their children education. its about how knowing the consequences of what they were doing (Across mined fields...) but still had to do it for their children to have an education and not be a slave like they were. you can tell its about education because of the last 8 lines. this is one of my favorite poems by her.
