How can I make the best temp. tattoo without going to a specialty store (read details!)?
I am a 16 year old girl who is very interested in the art of tattooing. I like to make temporary tattoos out of Sharpie, but I know this isn't very safe for my skin. I'm going to Hobby Lobby tomorrow and wanted to find some stuff to make better tattoos. NOTE: I am making temporary tattoos. NO needles are involved. Everything I do is on top of my skin.
Here are some questions I have:
1. Is India Ink safe on top of skin?
2. Are there any better inks than India Ink for temp. tattoos?
3. I want to draw my designs on tracing paper and then transfer them to my skin. My dilemma is that I can't find ink pencils at Hobby Lobby. Any alternatives to ink pencil that I can find at Hobby Lobby? Or any tips on getting my tattoo transferred from the tracing paper to my skin without an ink pencil?
4. Any alternatives to Green Soap?
5. Any ways to make the temp. tattoo stay longer?
Sorry about all of the questions, I'm just curious and I want the best advice.
Thanks!
When you say "India Ink," I assume you are referring to mehndi, or henna. Henna is entirely safe. My nationality is Indian, and I have been exposed to henna for basically my entire life. It will dye your skin, but it will fade. It is only a surface treatment. This is what makes it safe, in that it only affects the already dead skin cells that will shed off anyway.
What henna does is basically temporarily dye your skin. Depending on how your skin takes to it, it will last for approximately 1-3 weeks. How it works is that you draw the design on your skin using the henna, which is a dark paste like substance that dries quickly, and you let it sit for some time. You then wash it off, and it will leave a dark orange to brown colored design. Henna has a muddy consistency and smells awful, but it is a very effective way to have a temporary tattoo. It is used in weddings and special occasions in India.
To increase the coloration and duration of coloring, after creating the design, squeeze lemon juice over the henna. Let it sit overnight, or for several hours, untouched, before washing it off. The longer it sits, the darker the coloring (the lemon juice helps with the smell as well as with darkening the color faster). You can also use coconut milk instead of lemon juice.
As for using tracing paper, I don't know if there are ink pencils. I would try searching online, or asking an sales person at Hobby Lobby or Michael's. If you are concerned with getting the design on you, I would try using a cutout, if you decide to use henna. Many non-native henna artists use stencils for their designs. In fact, if you buy a henna kit, stencils are often included. They are the easiest and most user friendly, since henna is essentially a putty like substance.
