How to take a photo of paper without flash washout?

I have to take photos of several sheets of paper. I am using a common digital camera.

Is there a secret to preventing flash washout (which ruins the pic)???

I can't turn the flash off, because the photo is then fuzzy. '

Take a thin piece of white paper.
Hold it in front of the flash (reflect away. Preferably against ceiling).
Point & Shoot.
