frozen pipes in mobile home in Canada (single mom,3 kids, broken arm and trying to remain calm need advice!)?
my power company put my power on a limited output due to me owing money on my bill.It was paid and it took them 24 hours to take off the limit clip that was apparently only enough to run the furnace on low.Due to winter conditions they don't or can't cut you off completely. The following day (after the 24 hour lack of power to my heating tape, etc under the mobile),no water would come out of the taps. I went under the mobile and indeed it is frozen. we just happened to have a few days of -20 the day the power company restricted my power. what great luck. I took a hammer and chipped away the ice that surrounded some of the pipes. It is in the one half of the mobile but the other half is fine. I don't see anything broken but I am wondering if it will thaw once I have the heating tape working? some more of the cord is still trapped under the ice but I have a broken arm so it is really difficult to do. The weather is warmer for the next few days 2. Any suggestions for me? HELP
I might be a little late, but don't use a torch or anything that has a flame...the risk is too high to catch something on fire. You can use a hairdryer, heat lamp, heat gun, or anything of that nature.
Open the COLD side of the faucets on all of faucets...NOT the hot. You might end up draining your hot water tank while it is operational, and when the ice loosens up and the freezing water runs into your tank to fill it, the ice cold water will hit the hot tank and it could crack the tank.
Leave your cabinets open, just to allow a little extra heat to get to the pipes from in the house while you go under there and manually thaw your pipes.
Good luck!
