Wavicide...body piercing sterilization......yes or no?
I'm having trouble finding weather or not Wavicide can be used for sterilization of forceps etc. successfully. I know a autoclave is the best out there. So you dont have to tell me that. But I want to know if Wavicide is approved to sterilize the materials or not.
Other words, if you don't have a Autoclave and need to sterilize you're forceps and other materials can wavicde as a cold sterilizer be a acceptable form of sterilization and the materials be sterile enough to use on the next client....FDA approved? or no?
Ive been hunting the internet for a hour and haven't come up with anything to clearly answer that question. Anyone help?
There is no such thing as "sterile enough". Something is either sterile (free from all micro-organisms) or its not.
Besides paracetic acid (available only in a hospital setting), steam autoclaving is the only way to render something technically "sterile". All other liquids or chemicals can only be considered high-level disinfectants.
Wavicide is glutaraldehyde based and for the purposes of body piercing, should be sufficient as a high level disinfectant. In most uses, it is NOT a sterilant. I should mention also that Wavicide COULD be considered a sterilant if the items are soaked for more than 10 hours, but that is most likely not going to be the case outside of a medical setting. In addition, the items must then be extracted using sterile gloves (using aseptic technique) and rinsed several times in sterile water, in containers that have also been sterilized in an autoclave. None of this process is going to be done in a piercing salon, so 99% of the time, you should consider Wavicide as a high-level disinfectant.
Finally, glutaraldehyde is FDA approved for use as a high level disinfectant for medical devices.
