How do I get one of those big steel garbage dumbsters?
How do I get a garbage truck to dump a steel container in my driveway? I'm selling my home and I am throwing out at least 2,000 pounds of garbage and other materials.
I've had to do this about 6 times over the last three years. We bought a home built in 1870 and just seem to keep finding crap everywhere in this house. Under hauling or trash services in the yellow pages there should be hauling companies that will drop a container for you on your property.
Cost for us was about $300. They typically drop it on site for a week, extra time can be arranged for about $5 per day.
A couple of questions your going to be asked are-
1. What size container do you need?
You probably will need the smallest (15 cu yard) size. Talk to the person on the phone, they do have experience in these matters and believe it or not, the ones I've talked with aren't going to try to talk you into getting a bigger one that you won't need. They come in different cubic yard capacities. 10-15-20-25-up to 50 cu yards. 2000lbs is not a whole lot of stuff. But if it's bulky you may have to get a bigger container.
2. They will ask if you're throwing out appliances. Old ranges, washing machines are OK. But old air conditioners, even the window units are not. Federal requirements are in place to dispose of these items properly because of the refrigerant.
