What is a good method to remove break dust from aluminum alloy rims?
My car has a bunch of break dust built up on the rims and I can't get it off with conventional soap and water. It's only a problem visually, but I would like the rims to be clean. They are aluminum alloy. I don't want to use a chemical that will damage the rim. Just wondering if anyone had success with a specific cleaning agent any help is appreciated.
For the past several years our shop has used Gold Glass All Wheel cleaner by Meguiars. It runs about $6.00 a bottle at any parts store. It's completely safe on the aluminum and cuts through baked on brake dust very well.
For the most part any aluminum compatible wheel cleaner is going to do the trick. Most parts stores carry 10-12 brands of wheel cleaning products. You can find a cheaper alternative to the Meguiar product but you'll probably spend a bit more time scrubbing.
If you really want to make the wheels "pop" invest in some Meguiars Mag and Aluminum Polish. You'll be astounded at the difference it makes in the overall shine. This product is only to be applied to a perfectly cleaned wheel! It runs about $8.00 a tin. It can be applied with good old fashion elbow grease or a buff ball for faster results.
Hope this helps!
