HELP!-VETERINARIAN or DOG LOVERS/ HERBALIST?
I have a sm breed male 1/2 doxi (wiener dog) and 1/4 basset hound, 1/4 corgi. He's short haired. Any way the problem is he can't stop itching, it's driving him nuts, he's crying and wandering around, under chairs/sofa's trying to itch his back, he's rolling on the floor and making a grunting/growling noise, he just can't relieve the itch. He has NO fleas, i can't find 1 flea on him, he is bathed 1x per week, coat is shiny, he has no crustations or bleeding red spots, i can't figure out what the heck is making him itchy!? I've tried lubriderm oatmeal cream, helps but very temporary. I also have some 'Sulfodene' topical med, but i worry this will make his skin more dry, and itchy?? By the way this started when it got hot outside, so maybe connected? What i'm looking for is someone who knows some home remedy, a paste or bath concoction? ANY help please, i feel so sorry for him, he's shaking his body, the same way we shake like "ooh creepy", that' what he's doing, like twitching
An itchy dog is very frustrating for the owner, but think how miserable the poor dog is. A vet can give a steroid injection until you can find what is causing the problem that will offer immediate relief. The vet will also be able to tell if it is some type of bacterial skin infection which can be treated. It could be a food allergy. Common allergies are corn, soy, and wheat. The itch may respond to Benadryl. For small dogs I would suggest the liquid form of Children's Benadryl (12.5 mg. per teaspoon) at the rate of 1/2 mg - 2 mg. per pound every 8 hours. I would start with the lowest recommended dose. Yucca extract is an herbal anti-itch, but it will take a few weeks to build up in the dog's system.
I just looked at Sulfodene, I would try it. It says it is gentle enough for every day use and has two itch fighting ingredients. It is also an antibacterial. Just use cool water, warm and hot water will make the itch worse. Don't use a blow dryer or rub the dog with a towel as these also will make the itch worse.
